Provincial Grain Cars Sold to Short Rail Line Companies
The Provincial Government has struck a deal with three Saskatchewan short line railways to purchase the Saskatchewan Grain Car Corporation's fleet of 898 hopper cars for $9.7 million. The sales process was initiated in late March, with Saskatchewan's 13 commercial short lines given first priority to purchase the hopper cars. Following an extensive review of all proposals, the purchase approval was awarded to Big Sky Rail Corp. (663 cars),Great Western Railway Ltd. (150 cars) and Great Sandhills Railway (85 cars). The $9.7 million in total sales averages $10,800 per car with the paperwork finalized in the next few months.
