2017 Harvest Begins Across Saskatchewan

According to the latest crop report from the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture the 2017 harvest is underway for many producers across the Southern portion of the province. 47 percent of fall rye, 6 percent of winter wheat, 2 percent of lentils and 1 percent of field peas are now in the bin. In addition, numerous pulse crops in Southern and Central areas are being desiccated. Reported yields so far range from average to well below average, depending on field and moisture conditions. Crop damage this past week is mainly attributed to hot temperatures, hail, localized flooding, strong winds and lack of rain. Aphids, diamondback moths and grasshoppers are also causing crop damage in some areas.
